Make Something Monday

It's Monday! From now on, I'll start sharing my digital scrapbooking pages from Monday-Sunday of the previous week. I hope you don't get too bored. I really do love this hobby and creative outlet. I enjoy creating the pages and keeping my family's memories.

What's Cooking Wednesday

Well, the news around here on the food front is HEALTHY. I know, not very exciting. But I need to create some excitement for myself! I've been trying to change my lifestyle (I'm not calling it dieting) for about a month and a half now. So far, I've just kind of eaten food groups more than meals (does that make sense?). I don't feel like I'm really cooking a meal, I just have these different things that I eat: meat, veggie, fruits, cheese, more meat, more fruit, eggs, more veggies...you get the idea. I only have a few dishes(or what I consider a meal. I think I'm weird, because when I think of a meal, I think of dishes that have more than one ingredient. I've always been an avid one-pot cook, so maybe that has something to do with it) that are a pretty much all-around healthy dishes.

One of my go-to healthy recipes is one I've mentioned here one or two times. It's PW's Chicken Tortilla soup. It's deliciously yummy and pretty dern healthy!
Recipe here

I also recently threw together some stuffed peppers and we really enjoyed them. I noted all the things I wanted to do differently to make them better, too. Here's a rough outline of the recipe.

1 lb. ground turkey, seasoned with lots of good stuff (totally open to interpretation LOL)
When that's almost browned, throw in some chopped onions (oh, ya'll know me, right?!), garlic, and the tops of the peppers (that you are cutting open to stuff. when you cut the top off, the part around the stem is still good! Use every last bit!). Drain if needed.

When I made this the first time, I didn't use any rice, though it was in most recipes I glanced at. After eating it without rice, while it was yum yummy, I could see how having something rice-like in there would help. Anyone have any suggestions other than just rice? Bulgar? Quinoa? Something like that? I also didn't use any tomato product in the mix, but I could see really digging that, too. Some tomato sauce? Paste? Diced tomatoes? I'll have to think on that.

Stirred in some shredded cheese. Yeah, I can't seem to get away from the stuff. Shoved those peppers as full and as tight as I could get (I used red/orange/yellow peppers. MUCH better, IMO), and make the tops into little heaping mounds, too. Baked for 20 mins, topped with some cheese, then baked another 10 minutes. Some of the recipes I saw called for baking for over an hour, but I wanted the peppers to still have some crunch, and they turned out perfectly.

Here are a few recipes I want to try. Trusty old Pinterest, ya know.

Any good, healthy recipes you can share? I'd LOVE to get some more dishes in my rotation.

Let's see if I can come up with some kind of photo or something to go along with this post...

Ah! Here we go! I went went a couple of my friends to see Ree Drummond (aka Pioneer Woman, aka, PW, aka P-Dub) and have her sign our books! We met her (and Marlboro Man) in the flesh! And they were as nice as you'd expect them to be. And I had a great night out with the girls, too.

Till next time,

Time to Read Tuesday

First off, I wanted to tell you a few things that have been going on in my library world. Just in case you don't know, or I have a new reader (Hi new reader!!), I am a librarian in a small/medium-sized library district. I work in the Technical Services department. When describing my job, my favorite thing to tell people is that "all new books come through MY hands first, in some capacity." Doesn't that just sound dreamy? Anyway, our library has an initiative on the ballot to open a new library in our county seat of Hillsboro!! The thought of us opening a new branch is very daunting and exciting. So, if you have any kind of library initiative in your area, please consider voting for it. It will create jobs, increase educational resources in the area, offer programs of all kinds, both fun and educational, and just be a good place to hang out!

The other thing is that some of my co-workers and I have a book review blog, JCL Reads, that we contribute to. It's part of the "Missouri Book Challenge" and quite a few libraries participate. It's a fun thing to do, and it's also fun to "compete" with co-workers to see who reads the most. So it's a fun little site to check out. (Wow, that's a lot of "fun" in two sentences, huh?)

I've been going through peaks and valleys in my reading. I get a good book and I voraciously read through it. Then I get a book that isn't as interesting, and I drag my way through it. Usually, even if a book doesn't have me on the edge of my seat, I still read through it pretty quickly, but I seem to be a bit draggy lately and not reading as much as usual. Anyway, I'll give a little overview of a couple hits and misses I've read lately. Let's start with the not-so-great and save the bests for last.

Misses:
A Feast for Crows by George R. R. Martin.
4th book into the series. It took me FOREVER to finish this. Just not attention-grabbing. Almost none of the characters we know and love or hate. Too long. I almost never say that, but there just seemed to be so much extraneous stuff. I don't know, my bar was set pretty high with the first book in this series, and none of them since then have lived up to the first one. And Martin has a knack for doing things to his characters that really piss of readers. Not sure if that has a different effect on other readers, but for me, it just makes me want to stop reading. Though I probably won't - I'm much to invested, especially time-wise, in the series.

Smokin' Seventeen by Janet Evanovich.
Another case of a series not living up to its previous books. I've had the feeling that this series, while very funny and quick, easy reads, are very much declining. There are most definitely still laugh-out-loud moments, the story lines are getting more stupid and as much as I hate to say it, the writing just isn't as good as it once was. Plus, I hate that she sacrifices quality and quantity just to churn these books out every year (and this case, 2 books in less that a half year). The print is ridiculously big and the margins are even more ridiculously sized. Little things, I know, but when you notice a beloved and fun series in decline, you notice more and more things that make you roll your eyes.

 Hits:

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness.
Man, this book was good! A nice, big book and so well-written. I've dubbed this a "smart" vampire and witch novel. Not hokey and full of history, intrigue, and smart characters. You can read my quick review here.

Let's Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson.
Jenny Lawson, better know as The Bloggess, is as irreverent and hilarious as they come. This memoir tells about her life growing up, her trials with debilitating depression and anxiety, and life as a wife and mother. If you want to laugh until you pee your pants one minute, and tear up because of sympathy with major struggles, this is the book you want to read. Warning: Not for the faint of heart. She's odd, cusses worst than a sailor, and refers to her lady parts more often that a two-cent whore.

So, what have you been reading? What do you think of your local library? Are you a book hoarder, or not really interesting in reading at all? Or more likely, just can't seem to find the time? I'm oh-so-interested in your reading lives.

Oh, and because I feel like no post of mine is complete without a complimentary digiscrap page, I give to you my favorite page I created so far...ever.

Make Something Monday

Let's just pretend the whole last 7 months worth of blog posts are filled with witty and funny stories and beautiful scrapbooking pages. We can all agree on that, can't we? Sound  like a plan?

So the last 7 months have been...well, time has passed. My last post went into detail about how I had injured my leg and foot. Let me first tell you that now, 7 months later, I'm fine. I'm pretty well healed. I already have osteoarthritis in the site, so I'll have to deal with that for the rest of my life, but other than that, and some run-of-the-mill aches and pains, I'm good. I get to be one of those old ladies that can tell the weather by the cricks and creaks of her bones. As far as the whole healing process, just suffice it to say that it was long and hard, defeating and inspiring, and it's over now. I mean, I'm as healed as I'm going to get, and I'd call myself about 92% "back to normal." That's not bad, right?

I have missed blogging. For my abundance of readers (of whom I can count on one hand, heh), I'm sorry for just leaving you hanging. Blogging hadn't really even crossed my mind until a while ago, when a friend of mine said, "Hey, when you gonna blog again?" Then I remembered how much fun it was (when I had the inspiration) and how it was another way to connect with people. So I think, for now, I'm going to keep the same loose schedule I was on before.

That means it's make something Monday and we all knows that means me sharing my favorite hobby - digital scrapbooking. I'm a CTM (creative team member) for so many amazing designers and still enjoy it so much. I've done hundreds of pages in the 7 months I've been gone, so I'm just going to share a favorite page from each of the designers I create for. Here goes...

OUCH! and Time to Read Tuesday

Well, you know how I always complain about not having the time to sit and read like I used to? Well, I've been looking for a solution to the problem, but the one that ended up happening definitely wasn't one I planned on.

Saturday morning, I stepped down off of our porch and the welcome mat that was there slipped out from underneath me and I fell. HARD. After a very hard time getting me to the car, we went to the ER. Diagnoses: chipped tibia (shin bone) down by ankle and fractured tibia. All I knew is that it freaking hurt. And kept hurting. And hurt some more. I'm not usually that whiny, but dang I was in pain.

Monday, I got an appointment with an orthopedic specialist that the ER doc referred me to. Let me explain something to you guys. I live on a hill...I usually say I live down in a hole. My driveway is level with our second-story windows. We have to go down a set of stairs off of our driveway just to get to our front door. Well, I had to get up these stairs to the car to go to the doctor. Somehow, with the help of my mother and a lot of me saying, "I'm scared, Mom! I don't think I can do this, Mom!," I finally made it to the car. I was sweating profusely and so shaky and exhausted I think I could have fallen asleep right then and there. But I knew I got to ride in a wheelchair once I got to the hospital, so I was like, "let's go!" Let's just say the crutches aren't the easiest thing for me and they have made me so sore I could cry.

OK, back to the orthopedic specialist. When I got there, he said with the description of my pain, he wanted to get new x-rays. I was complaining of my ankle hurting on both sides (not just the side that the chipped bone was on), plus my calf was really hurting all the way up to my knee. After some excruciating  manipulation of my leg/foot, the x-rays were taken. He came in and told me I have a "special" break. Yeah, of course I did. So this was my new diagnoses. I broke my tibia halfway between my ankle and knee. WAY higher than was first thought. But that was the good news. My ankle was the doozy. I had twisted my ankle and popped it out of socket. The tendon holding the ankle joint together then snapped. So my ankle was just kinda wobbling around in there. And on top of all that, he said that the initial x-ray wouldn't have shown this, because my ankle was slowly breaking over the last two days. So THAT'S where all that pain was coming from! I was just glad that my pain was legitimate and I wasn't just being a baby :)

So this is my view when I'm parked at the computer. I'm so glad we found a way that I could situate myself at the computer for a while. I usually can only stay here for an hour or so, but I'm thankful for that!

And just so you know, the husband that I gush over all the time is proving himself all over again to be the best, most amazing husband ever. He is taking such wonderful care of me. He's doing things no man should have to do for their wife. Maylee is being a great helper, too. I hate being so helpless and having to have everybody do every little thing for me, but I think I'm coming to terms with it. I may even start liking it :D. No, I'm hoping that I feel better after the surgery and can be a bit more mobile.

Ok, that's my story. Sorry it's so long. OH! The original point of this post was supposed to be what I'm reading. Well, I'm still reading Great Expectations, and I expect to have more time to read now, so maybe I'll get finished with it soon.

Til later, my friends,

Fun Friday

Fun Friday, huh? Go somewhere fun? Do something fun? Make something fun? Talk to someone fun? Read something fun? So many options? Today, I think I'm going in a different direction, though. I'm going to tell you about something I got that is fun.

So I have this little hobby called digital scrapbooking, right? Well, what is one major thing you need for digital scrapbooking? Digital photographs, of course! The hobby and digiscrap and photography really goes hand and had. As a matter of fact, many digiscrappers I know are professional photographers.

Anywho, in August of 2007, just a few months before I found out I was pregnant, I bought my first digital camera. Yes, I was a little behind the times! I got a Sony CyberShot and I really liked it! After I had Maylee, I came to realize just how important my camera was. I mean, I was taking hundreds of photos every month. So in November of 2009, right after Thanksgiving (and just in time for Christmas!), I got an even better camera, c Canon PowerShot SX200 IS. This was such an upgrade from what I had and I was ecstatic with it for so long. But...you know how it is with electronic toys. You always want the biggest and the best. About six months ago, I got the itch to get a dSLR REALLY badly. I had a serious hankering. But I waited patiently (yeah right) until we could afford it. And that time finally came! A week ago (ok, a week exactly. I bought it at 4:35 p.m. CST) today, I got my first dSLR! I am one happy girl. You guys should have seen me checking out with this puppy. I was literally shaking. My stomach had butterflies. And yes, I'll admit, my eyes were watering a little...it was the wind, you see.

So, here's my new baby, a Canon EOS Rebel t3. Yes, there are much better/nicer/pricier dSLRs. But this one is perfect for me and I'm very happy with it.

Now the fun begins with trying to learn how to use this puppy. To say it has lots of bells and whistles is quite an understatement. There is so much to learn. I've pinned so many photography cheat sheets, just to kinda get my feet wet. Here's one of my favorites.

Since I got the camera, I've taken so many "dummy" shots of teddy bears, vases of flowers, bottles of lotion...anything I feel like I have a good angle on and I can practice on. So here are a couple of my favorite shots with my new camera.

Gah! I'm in love! I can't wait to learn how to really use this puppy!

Love to all! Have a wonderful weekend,

Be thoughtful Thursday

Be thoughtful Thursday is meant to be for going out and doing something for other people. While that will work some weeks, this week it's not going to pan out, so I've gone a different way for thoughtfulness.

This Thursday, I'm going to talk about the process of thinking and writing down things you're thinking. My hobby of digital scrapbooking helps me in this respect a lot. I have a creative outlet to put down some of my thoughts and I am so thankful for that. We have this thing in the scrapping world called "scrap therapy." Most of the time, we like to scrap beautiful pictures, fun events, funny things that happened. But it's also good to get your feelings, your REAL feelings down on paper, whether it be just writing them or doing something creative. Sometimes, just writing down how shitty you feel helps you actually feel better. Like talking to the best listener ever...yourself! Now those of us in the digi-world may choose to share these LOs or not. I'm going to share a couple of mine with you guys. And mind you, not all of the feelings you want to get down are necessarily BAD feelings, some are just, well, emotional.

This one, I knew I needed to kick my own butt. But I got to give myself a tongue-lashing in a beautiful way!
Click to enlarge photo and read journaling. See here for credits.

This one is an emotional one about my little one growing up and what I wish for her.

These next two LOs are ones that I've only shared in one gallery. They're not all over digiland like all my other LOs are. This one is very emotional for me.
Click to enlarge and read journaling. See here for credits.

And, obviously, so is this one.
Click to enlarge and read journaling. See here for credits.

So do you all keep a diary? Journal? Scrap therapy? Do you just internalize everything? If you do, how's that working out for you?

Well, that's that for today. Thanks for letting me bare my soul. Don't stomp on it, please.

Love to all,
